Keeping a close watch on Camberley’s shoppers

A couple of days ago we saw ‘something’ being installed in Princess Way and also in the delivery area in Ashwood House. So we did the obvious, and, when it was safe to do so, we asked the chap on the ladder what he was doing. He replied that he was installing security cameras.

The likelihood is that the new cameras are ‘just’ routine additions. However, not having any further information, we started to speculate: are they part of a more-ambitious project?

You’ll remember that, a few years ago, the council was a key player in a project to turn the Square into the UK’s “first ever 5G-enabled shopping centre, opening the doors to a new way of shopping with virtual and augmented reality”. But Covid and international ‘politics’ got in the way, and the project closed.

Are we seeing the first shoots of a similar initiative??

  1. Its not a huge huge ladder but certainly a life changing one if things went wrong. With nobody footing it, a flimsy fence round, the possibility of kids coming along the street…

    • 5G has been available in town centre for quite some time (I can’t tell you exactly how long). But whether you can receive it depends on where you address, and, in particular, who your network provider is. However, the project described in my earlier comment wasn’t really about’just’ giving the public a faster mobile network, but, as I understand it, using the extra speed to provide – and exploit – a greater data flow between businesses and consumers.

  2. I would be more worried it is linked to some form of AI based facial recognition system so the council can track our movements.

    • Do you ever wonder if mobile phones are being tracked more widely in shopping centres than people suspect, even without facial recognition? Not necessarily for Big Brother reasons, but to gain commercial data.

    • I’M GUESSING THAT SURREY HEATH BOROUGH COUNCIL ARE 10+ YEARS AWAY FROM BEING TECHNICALLY COMPETENT TO EVEN SPELL AI NEVER MIND IMPLEMENT IT!!!!

      • It would be good if the new car park system at least included ‘pay by phone’. Just like the old one did. At the moment, it’s negative progress!
