Yes, we really do mean the title of this post. High Streets have always changed – shops have come and gone. But our High Street is probably a good indicator of what they’ll be like in the future. There’ll be fewer shops selling ‘hardware’, and more emphasis on selling services – fast food, nail bars, hairdressing and so on. Here’s the latest addition:
It’s easy to say that we have too many hairdressers and fast food outlets already. However, many of them represent a substantial investment in our town by their owners. We should be thankful that they have done so in Camberley and not elsewhere.
Of course, the other side of the coin is that some businesses cause serious inconvenience to local residents, especially if they operate late at night. But that’s a matter for proper controls; it doesn’t mean that they’re fundamentally undesirable.
