Adult Learning/Adult Education

The adult education facilities in Firwood Drive were re-named the Adult Learning Centre by the county council quite a few years ago.  (We’re not sure exactly when.)   Isn’t it time that the county council updated its road sign to reflect the change?

Yet again we make the point that a sign with incorrect information is of limited use, at best, and sometimes they’re worse than no sign at all.  But, somehow, we don’t expect this one to be changed any time soon.  Hard luck, visitors – the rest of us don’t need local signs anyway.

  1. A lot of us still call it that anyway. I don’t know why they spend a lot of money and hold a lot of committee meetings to change a perfectly good name.

      • Sadly, there’s probably a lot of truth in that. It’s not necessarily a cynical observation – give people a job and a job title and they’ll find ways of keeping busy, if only to occupy the time.

    • Maybe names are like logos – you don’t realise they’re dated because they’re so familiar. But if you DO change them, then you’ve got to do the job properly; using the old name on public signs suggests that the change wasn’t really justified.

  2. Hi,
I actually work at Camberley Adult Learning centre and thought I can explain the changes to avoid any confusion.

The centre at France Hill Drive is called Camberley Adult Learning centre, and it’s a part of Surrey Adult Learning. Before the change in 2013, we were called ACL (Adult and Community Learning), which was confusing as there are many other ACLs across the UK, which are not connected and funded differently, hence the decision to change to Surrey Adult Learning.
Before ACL (not sure exactly when) we were called Surrey Heath Adult Education Centre and perhaps other variants before that.

Please note that the sign does not mention neither of its previous names – as very often such signs are not meant to do that. They are supposed to show the function of the premises – not necessarily its name. That’s why you will often have SHOPPING CENTRE instead of its brand name, or CIVIC CENTRE instead of Surrey Heath Borough Council etc.

ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE sign still perfectly explains what is the function of the premises, hence we did not request spending public money on changing the sign.

It is also worth noting that since we changed the brand name to Surrey Adult Learning, we have experienced a high increase in the learners numbers and, thus, the amount and the variety of adult education courses we are able to offer in Camberley.

I hope that explain the subject a little from Surrey Adult Learning perspective.

    Kind regards

    • Me think you doth protest too much. This is hardly a ditch worth dying in, but signs are NOT supposed to show a function. They’re meant to tell strangers where something is – so the clearer they are the better. Using the wrong name (or are you saying that education and learning are synonymous?) is a step in the wrong direction.
